ABOUT ME

I have taught, counseled, intervened and educated mostly underserved teens and adults for fourteen years now.  The first sentence in my philosophy of teaching states that teaching is INTERVENTION, which means LIFE COACHING!

I have taught and designed a wide variety of courses from Anger Management to Adult ESL.  The one common denominator for students of all ages is the need for appropriate and timely intervention, i.e., life coaching.

Recently, an adult education student came into class early and looking very upset. She started out by asking me the meaning of an idiom a co-worker had remonstrated against her.  He said talking to her was like 'beating one's head up against the wall.'  This nice lady, a software engineer for a major telecommunications company, wanted to know if this was a negative idiom and some more detail about what it meant.

Apparently, a disgruntled co-worker had written a very negative email to her and she was concerned enough about it to take the matter to her boss.  Still clearly upset, she vented about this co-worker wanting her job and sending verbal daggers via email, but I assured her that talking with her was nothing at all like beating one's head against the wall because of her advanced fluency in English as her second language. She immediately looked relieved and calm again.

By the end of the semester, her scores on the exit test were among the two highest.  When I let her know this fact via email, she sincerely thanked me for her improvement.

I was so disorganized and devoid of energy stacking way too much stuff in my second bedroom.  I love to decorate for the holidays, but I couldn't find the things I needed to effectively decorate.  Claire came over and coached me to organize my supplies in a logical way, and to get rid of dozens of boxes I no longer needed.  Now everything is neatly put away and labeled in big bins on top of shelves in my garage.  I have loads more energy and can even park my car in my garage now!  Hurray!

Sometimes we find ourselves on a rumble strip in life, and what I really want people to know is:  It's okay to ask for help, especially during those trying times.

We are bombarded every day with so much information and stimulation.  It can be overwhelming, but with the right tools and strategies, we can win over stress and overstimulation and find true peace and harmony again.
